Golf simulators that fit a basement

The short answer

Basements usually have the depth and lose on height. The number that matters is the distance to the lowest duct, beam or light, not the finished ceiling, and it is almost always lower than the one people measure first. At 8 ft, sensors that sit beside the ball are the reliable choice.

Checked against an 18 ft deep by 14 ft wide basement with 8 ft to the lowest duct.

What fits 18 ft deep by 14 ft wide at 8 ft

13 of the 48 complete packages we could check fit this room, and 13 of the 18 launch monitors do. 4 launch monitors could not be checked because the maker does not publish the placement figures. A further 10 packages are not checked at all, because neither the retailer nor the bundled sensor publishes enough for us to judge the room. They are excluded from the count above rather than counted as failures.

This ceiling rules out overhead sensors, which mount inside a fixed height band. Sensors that sit beside the ball impose no ceiling requirement of their own, so that is the lane here.

Room figures are the retailer’s own published minimum for that package, not our arithmetic. Where a retailer publishes none we fall back to checking the launch monitor and the enclosure separately and say so. We show one price and never a struck-through one, because a was-price is a claim about the past that we cannot check. Prices move often, so treat these as the figure on the date each package cites.

Room depth is the minimum this unit can work in, counting clearance behind the screen, ball flight and the space the sensor itself needs. A dash means the maker does not publish that figure, never that we guessed it. Each unit’s page lists its sources and the date they were read.

1 that do not fit this room, and why

What is specific to this room

The duct sets the height, and it is rarely central

Basement services run where the building needs them rather than where you would like them. The usable height at the tee is frequently a foot below the finished ceiling, and often differs by a foot between one end of the room and the other.

Getting the enclosure in is a real constraint

Frame sections are long and rigid. A staircase with a turn at the bottom has stopped more basement builds than ceiling height has, and it is worth measuring the stairwell before the room.

Noise travels up, not sideways

The sound that annoys the rest of the house is impact transmitted through the structure from the screen and the mat, not air-borne noise through the walls. Foam behind the screen and under the mat is the effective fix, and treating the walls is mostly wasted money.

Try your own measurements

The figures above are a typical room of this type. Yours will differ, and the ceiling especially, so put your own in.

Common questions

What ceiling height do you need in a basement for a golf simulator?+

We treat 8 ft as the floor and 9 ft as comfortable. Measure to the lowest obstruction. A duct running across the swing path can cost you a foot of usable height that the ceiling itself does not show.
