Golf simulator room size

The short answer

A comfortable home simulator wants roughly 18 ft deep, 12 ft wide and a 9 ft ceiling. Depth is the one that fails, not height, because it is three separate distances added together rather than a single threshold.

Depth is three numbers

People measure their room, see sixteen feet, and assume that is plenty. It is not one number though. It is a budget, and everything in it has to fit.

Behind the screen1 ftFor the enclosure frame fittings. More than the screen itself suggests.
Ball flight10 ftEnough to read the ball off the face before it hits the screen.
Behind the ball7 ftYour backswing, and for a radar unit the sensor as well.
Total18 ftFor a comfortable room.
ceiling 9 ftsensor1 ft10 ft ball flight7 ft behind the ball
Drawn to scale from your measurements. Depth is three distances added together, and the last one is the one that changes with where the sensor sits.

That last row is where launch monitors differ from each other, and it is the whole reason a room that fits one sensor will not fit another.

The sensor decides your depth

Radar units sit behind the ball. Garmin's manual puts the R10 six to eight feet behind the tee. FlightScope specifies seven to nine. That distance is on top of everything else, which is why a fifteen foot garage that looks generous suddenly is not.

Camera units sit beside the ball. They eat lateral space instead, so your depth budget is just your swing and the ball flight. SkyTrak's own planning page makes the point directly, noting that other monitors require up to eight feet behind the hitting area while theirs does not.

Overhead units use no floor at all. They hang forward of the tee, which buys back the feet a radar unit costs you. The trade is that they have to mount inside a fixed height band, covered in the ceiling height guide.

Width and handedness

Width is the easiest of the three to solve and the one most likely to be quietly wrong. A single golfer can work in 12 ft with the tee offset toward their side. The moment a right handed and a left handed golfer share the room, the tee has to sit closer to centre and you need 14 ft at minimum, or 15 ft for both to swing without repositioning the mat.

There is a second-order effect worth knowing. A camera unit sits on the far side of the ball, and which side that is flips between a right handed and a left handed golfer. So in a two-golfer household a side-mounted sensor has to be physically moved between sessions, while an overhead or behind-ball unit does not. That is a genuine argument for overhead placement that has nothing to do with accuracy.

Room depth is the minimum this unit can work in, counting clearance behind the screen, ball flight and the space the sensor itself needs. A dash means the maker does not publish that figure, never that we guessed it. Each unit’s page lists its sources and the date they were read.

Common questions

What size room do you need for a golf simulator?+

About 18 ft deep by 12 ft wide with a 9 ft ceiling is comfortable for one golfer. You can install in less, but depth is the measurement that fails first and the one people underestimate.

Is room depth or ceiling height more important?+

Depth, for most rooms. Ceiling height is a single hard threshold you either clear or you do not. Depth is cumulative: clearance behind the screen, plus ball flight, plus whatever the sensor and your backswing need behind the tee. A radar launch monitor adds six to nine feet to that total on its own.

How wide does a golf simulator room need to be?+

About 12 ft for a single golfer with the tee offset to their side. If a right handed and a left handed golfer will both use it, 14 ft is the floor and 15 ft lets both swing without moving the mat.
